How to vote in the

consular elections

Why these elections matter:

Every year, French citizens living outside France elect their representatives to the Assembly of French Citizens Abroad and their consular delegates. These elected officials:

  • represent French citizens before consular services and the Embassy;

  • participate in consular councils to advocate for your interests;

  • and delegates play a role in the election of senators representing French citizens living abroad.

✔️ You must be registered on the consular voter list at your consulate.

👉 If you are not registered on this list, you will not be able to vote in these elections.

How do I vote?

📝 Step 1: Register on the consular voter list

Registration on this list is required to vote from abroad.

🾀 To sign up, you can:

  1. Register online through the online service of the Registry of French Citizens Living Abroad.

  2. Go directly to the Consulate or Embassy responsible for your area of residence with the required documents (ID, proof of address, etc.).

📅 Important: There is a registration deadline before the election; be sure to check it each year on the official website or with your consulate.

🗳️ Step 2: Voting procedures:

Once you are registered on the consular voter list, there are several ways to vote:

  • Voting at a consular polling station: You can go to the Embassy or Consulate on Election Day to vote in person, just as you would in a traditional election at the polls.

  • Online voting (electronic voting): For consular elections (and legislative elections), you can vote online if you have provided a valid email address and phone number. You will then receive your login credentials to vote online via the secure portal.

  • Voting by proxy: If you are unable to come in person, you can also appoint a trusted person to vote on your behalf. This must be done well in advance of the election.
